Zambia Export Grower’s Association (ZEGA)
- The Zambia Export Grower’s Association (ZEGA) was formed in 1984 as a non-profit making association to promote the interests of all growers wishing to export fresh horticulture produce.
- ZEGA has around 50 paid up members, of whom 35 will be directly exporters. In 1998 a total of 7923 tonnes of produce were exported. this grew to 8428 tonnes in 1999 with a gross sales value of around US$62 million. In 1999 the Zambia National Farmer’s Union (ZNFU) awarded ZEGA a Certificate of Merit for Excellent Performance. In the same year the Zambia Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) awarded ZEGA the trophy for the Best Exporting Company.
- Khal Amazi produces a supersweetheart rose which is a mainstay of European supermarkets flower offerings.
- A full colour range is grown in 64ha of greenhouses across three sites in the Chalimbana Valley on the eastern outskirts of Lusaka in Zambia. The roses are harvested daily, and then immediately graded and bunched to fulfil supermarket orders.
- We value add as much as possible by sleeving and adding flower food to the bunches.
- All flowers are exported by air to the European supermarkets within 3 days of being harvested, using both cargo and passenger planes.
